Dalia Dippolito became a household name in connection with one of the most outrageous crimes in American history. It all commenced with a fantastic incident in Boynton Beach, Florida, which then turned into a media frenzy with elements including reality shows, police detectives, and courtroom suspense.

Dalia Dippolito is a name people recognize and associate it with the American story of crime and the media’s powerful and often questioned role in its justice system. There is an abundance of information regarding the trial in the media, but not many focus on the crime. In this headline, we will present the crime, trial, and controversy related to Dalia Dippolito.

The Crime: Attempted Murder Conspiracy

In 2009, Dalia Dippolito was 26 years old. She attempted to hire an assassin a few days after her marriage with Michael Dippolito. The twist in the story is that the hitman was an undercover police officer, and the entire exchange was captured on hidden cameras.

Boynton Beach Police received a tip-off concerning a woman who claimed her husband was murdered. The claimant was none other than Dalia’s lover. The police set a plan into motion which consisted of showing Dalia a tape where she was calm and cool while explaining a murder plot assuring a crew of cops in charge of her case on multiple occasions 5,000 percent sure.

On the day the hit was supposed to occur, police set up a phony crime scene and told Dalia that her husband had died. Her screening was emotional in a way that psychologists later suggested was fully performative.

The trial: Jaw-Dropping Legal Drama And Evidence

Dalia Dippolito 2011 first trial is notoriously known thanks to her extensive media coverage on NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s 20/20. As the prosecution presented the undercover video footage, audio files, and key witness testimonies from the officers who participated in the operation, it was clear that everything was going to be easy sailing. The State’s Theory of the Case was as follows: Dalia attempted to orchestrate her husband’s murder in what she thought was a cold calculation to free herself from the marriage shackles for financial considerations.

The defense, however, argued that the entire thing was a setup for a TV show. They countered with the theory alleging that Dalia was part of a scheme solely meant to catapult Michael Dippolito (her husband) by virtue of his starring role. Remember that Dippolito guy? The defense averred that this whole thing was heavily scripted, never meant to be taken seriously.

And even with all that, she still got convicted for solicitation to commit first-degree murder and given 20 years in state prison.

Appeals, Retrials, and Public Backlash

In 2014, Dalia Dippolito appeal was granted on the basis that the jury may have been affected by unfair publicity surrounding the trial due to media coverage prior to the trial. In 2016, she was granted a retrial which concluded with a hung jury where eight jurors were in favor of guilty while four were not.

Dalia Dippolito underwent another trial in 2017 where she was found guilty once again, this time receiving a sentence of 16 years of imprisonment. Serving her time in a correctional facility located in Florida, she actively started to serve her sentence.

The Controversy: Trial by Media?

The Dalia Dippolito Case sparked a lot of controversy due to the media being negatively influenced by the legal case. Cameras have the potential to interfere with the fairness of a legal process, and the case being filmed for the show COPS draws ethical concerns regarding the investigation’s impartiality.

As for critics of the case, they have stated the following:

  • Law enforcement might have intentionally exaggerated elements of the case for the sake of spectacle.
  • The unrelenting media exposure influenced public perception and juror impartiality.
  • The defendant was not afforded a fair trial because footage aired in excess prior.

Many others, however, assert that for all the media attention, the tape recorded evidence was exceedingly incriminating and guilt was determined rationally.

The Aftermath: Where Are They Now?

  • Dalia Dippolito is currently serving a 16-year sentence. She continues to appeal her conviction and has never wavered from claiming her innocence.
  • As for Michael Dippolito, the victim in the case, he has distanced himself from the public eye in recent years, though he has shared how the incident took a toll on him both mentally and monetarily.
  • It’s quite remarkable that true crime documentaries, YouTube analyses, and podcasts still delve into the case, highlighting the persistently capturing interest of the public.
